Description
We are looking for an intern to assist with microalgae cultivation research as part of the Proteins4Singapore initiative, which focuses on developing sustainable and locally produced protein sources for novel foods. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in biological research and cultivation techniques that contribute to advancing sustainable food production in Singapore.
Overview
Microalgae are promising protein-rich organisms that can be cultivated efficiently with minimal environmental impact. In this project, the focus is on optimizing cultivation processes to enhance growth and protein productivity through improved media composition and culture management. Interns will learn the fundamentals of sterile cultivation, growth monitoring, and analytical methods used to quantify biomass and protein content.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and sterilize media for microalgae cultivation under aseptic conditions.
- Conduct flask inoculations and maintain laboratory-scale cultures.
- Monitor culture conditions (pH, temperature, light intensity, and nutrient concentration) and record experimental data.
- Perform regular observations and measurements to evaluate microalgae growth and health.
- Assist with biomass collection, sample preparation, and analytical methods
- Support troubleshooting of culture issues and maintenance of cultivation systems.
- Keep detailed records of procedures, results, and maintenance activities.
- Collaborate with senior researchers to support ongoing experiments and data analysis.
Learning Experience
The internship program combines theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory training. Interns will gain experience in:
- Microalgae cultivation and handling techniques.
- Application of bioprocess and biotechnology principles to optimize growth.
- Use of analytical tools for monitoring biomass and protein levels.
- Data collection, reporting, and scientific documentation practices.
- Working within a multi-disciplinary research environment alongside experienced scientists and engineers.
The intern will work under close supervision and receive direct guidance throughout the attachment. Regular discussions and feedback will ensure proper understanding of experimental methods, data handling, and cultivation procedures. This hands-on training approach provides continuous learning through day-to-day lab activities and research tasks.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled BSc or MSc student in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biomolecular engineering, environmental engineering, food science, biological sciences, or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques (pipetting, sterilization, media preparation) is preferred.
- Highly attentive to detail, responsible, and willing to learn.
- Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a research team.
This internship offers an excellent opportunity to explore applied research in microalgae biotechnology and contribute to Singapore’s growing efforts toward sustainable protein production as well as opportunity to work on cutting-edge research at the intersection of biotechnology, sustainability, and food science. The successful candidate will gain practical experience in a dynamic and international research environment and contribute to Singapore’s protein innovation landscape. We encourage curiosity, creativity, and a passion for scientific exploration.
What TUM CREATE offers you
- Allowance
- Multicultural, vibrant, modern, and positive working environment in Singapore
- Campus-sited office location with a host of facilities
Applications
Please send your application to hr@tum-create.edu.sg, including a cover letter and CV, and indicate whether you will intern on a full- or part- time basis.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
