Laboratory Specialist – Plant Breeding and Field Research
Job Description
The Laboratory Specialist will support plant breeding and crop improvement research projects through laboratory, greenhouse, and field activities. The role involves assisting with breeding trials, data collection, sample processing, germplasm management, and molecular analyses while ensuring the accurate implementation of research protocols and maintenance of research facilities and equipment. Responsibilities • Support the implementation of plant breeding and crop improvement research projects in accordance with approved research protocols. • Ensure the accurate collection, management, and reporting of laboratory, greenhouse, and field research data. • Maintain the quality, integrity, and traceability of breeding materials, seed stocks, and germplasm collections. • Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory and field equipment. • Coordinate research activities with scientists, students, and technical staff to achieve project objectives. • Follow laboratory, greenhouse, and field safety procedures and ensure compliance with institutional policies. • Contribute to the successful completion of research project milestones and deliverables. • Maintain high standards of research quality, organization, and documentation throughout all project activities.
Minimum Qualification
• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Plant Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Environmental Sciences, Plant Biotechnology, Genetics, or a related field. • Minimum of 2 years of experience in agricultural research, plant breeding, crop production, or laboratory and field research activities. • Knowledge of field trial management, plant propagation, and data collection methods. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and research data management.
Preferred Qualification
• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Plant Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Environmental Sciences, Plant Biotechnology, Genetics, or a related field. • Minimum of 2 years of experience in agricultural research, plant breeding, crop production, or laboratory and field research activities. • Knowledge of field trial management, plant propagation, and data collection methods. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and research data management.
Expected Skills
• Conduct crossing, pollination, seed production, and other breeding-related activities. • Establish and maintain field trials, breeding nurseries, and greenhouse experiments. • Collect, record, and organize phenotypic and agronomic data from research trials. • Prepare plant and seed samples for laboratory analysis and research activities. • Perform routine laboratory procedures, including sample processing and molecular analyses. • Manage seed inventories, germplasm collections, and breeding materials. • Monitor crop performance, pests, diseases, and environmental conditions. • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, field equipment, and research facilities. • Enter and verify research data and maintain accurate records and databases. • Assist in preparing technical reports, research summaries, and project documentation.
